Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism
The Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism was started in September 1993.The OPD is conducted on all working days. Registration is from 8 am to 11 pm. Patients with endocrine disorders namely diabetes mellitus ,thyroid disorders, adrenal problems, pituitary diseases, gonadal disorders and metabolic bone disease (osteomalacia, primary hyperparathyroidism, fluorosis, osteoporosis etc.)are attended to. Every Tuesday afternoon from 2.30 to 3.30 pm there is a Pediatric Endocrine OPD where cases like short stature, thyroid disorders, obesity, hypogonadism etc. apart from metabolic bone diseases like rickets are seen. The outpatient services draw a crowd of around seventy to eighty patients every day. All deserving patients are admitted for evaluation. These include  acute metabolic complications of diabetes (commonly diabetic ketoacidosis) as well as patients requiring endocrine dynamic testing .Patients are also initially admitted for the workup of metabolic bone disease. Our Endocrinology laboratory is a dedicated laboratory and is the biggest and the first of its kind in the whole of South India. It performs various hormone assays namely: TSH, T4, T3, LH, FSH, Estradiol, Prolactin, Cortisol, GH, PTH and 25 OH vitamin D .The laboratory also performs the Glycated Hemoglobin test , which tells about the level of diabetes control over the preceding 2-3 months. As a part of metabolic bone disease work up , an ion selective electrode estimates serum, urine and water fluoride.
