INTRODUCTION

The department of cardiology is the first one of its kind in the whole Rayalaseema area of Andhra Pradesh, which offers all the non-invasive, invasive and interventional facilities for all the cardio vascular problems. This department has a fully equipped intensive coronary care unit, non-invasive unit and a cardiac catheterisation laboratory, all working smoothly since its inception. The department runs out-patient services on all the days. Apart from this, emergency services are available round the clock. The department offers all the facilities in non-invasive, invasive and interventional cardiology. Though the department caters primarily to the people of Rayalaseema region, patients do come from all over Andhra Pradesh and even from other states. The number of patients seeking cardiac care is steadily increasing.

Till now 3000 catheterisation procedures have been performed which include mainly coronary angiography and congenital heart disease patients. Interventional catheterisation also started in January'94. Till now 1000 interventional procedures have been performed with very good results. This includes 500 mitral valvuloplasties. All the cases of mitral valvuloplasties have been done using inoue balloon dilatation catheter and even the difficult cases of mitral stenosis like those having severe sub valvular pathology or LA apendage clot or calcific mitral-valvuloplasy has been done with good results. Around 300 coronary angioplasties have been already done.

Mitral valvuloplasties have been done using mitral commissurotomy device invented by Dr.Alen Cribier, France. So So far 10 cases have been done.

The department of cardiology in its 10th year of service has made a good progress both in diagnostic and interventional cardiology. Apart from the diagnostic arena, the department is regularly imparting academic/technical training to the Cardiovascular Technology students vis-a-vis the latest developments taking place in the field of Cardiology.
