Director-cum-Vice Chancellor

 

Dr. T.S. Ravikumar is Director & Vice Chancellor at Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) Tirupati.  He is former Director & CEO of Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Puducherry, India.  He came to India after serving in the U.S for over 36 years in various capacities with the goals of serving the poor and underprivileged and to design Patient Safety models in hospitals.  He completed his M.S in Surgery from Madras Medical College and completed American Board of Surgery in addition to FRCS from Canada & Edinburgh. He is a fellow of American College of Surgeons.

His appointments have included: Assistant and later Associate Professor of Surgery, Harvard Medical School Associate Professor and Chief of Surgical Oncology, Yale University School of Medicine Professor of Surgery and molecular biology, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Chief of Surgery at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey and Surgeon-in-chief, Senior VP for surgical services at Montefiore Medical Center, North shore LIJ health System, New York. He held University Chair John D. Mountain Endowed Chair of Surgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Prior to moving back to India, he was at Geisinger Health System, Pennsylvania as Director of NCI Community Cancer Center Program & Director, Surgical Innovations & Chief Quality Officer.

He is recognized internationally for his work in colorectal cancer and liver surgery and patient safety.  He has over 230 peer reviewed publications, abstracts and book chapters.

He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors including the top doctors/best doctors listings consistently since 1995. He is a member of several surgical and oncologic societies, including Society of University Surgeons and the American Surgical Association. He is a past President of New York Surgical Society. The New York Daily News named him "21 New Yorkers to Watch in the 21st Century" in its 2000 millennium edition. Under his leadership, JIPMER for the first time in its history, received award of excellence "CNBC TV 18 - ICICI Lombard - India Healthcare Awards" as 'Best hospital with Medical School - Non Metro 2014-15'.

Under his leadership, JIPMER won the acclaim as the third ranked medical school, sixth highly rated multi-specialty hospital as well as ranked fourth for research infrastructure in all of India.  At JIPMER he established over 30 new international and national collaborations, opened a 400 bed Women & Children Hospital, an Academic Centre and a large student Hostel Complex. He initiated several other projects super specialty expansion including multi- organ transplantation / regenerative medicine; and new outpatient, dental, geriatric wing. He spearheaded several initiatives such as: JIPMER International School of Public Health, JIPMER Quality Council and Apex trauma/emergency/ disaster management centre for South India. Currently at SVIMS, Tirupati he is establishing ten institutes of excellence including Emergency/ trauma care, cardiac care, renal sciences & multiorgan transplantation, to name a few.  A medical college exclusively for women was inaugurated in December 2016 at SVIMS.
