Introduction
The Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism was started in
September 1993.The Endocrine OPD is conducted on all working days in
the 1st floor
of the new Sri Padmavathi Medical College for Women hospital.
Registration is from 8 am to 11 pm. Patients with Endocrine
disorders namely diabetes mellitus, thyroid disorders, adrenal
problems, pituitary diseases, gonadal disorders and metabolic bone
disease (osteomalacia, primary hyperparathyroidism, fluorosis,
osteoporosis etc.)are attended to. The outpatient services draw a
crowd of around 100-120 patients every day.
Every Tuesday afternoon from 2.30 pm
onwards there is a Pediatric Endocrine clinic where cases like
short stature, thyroid disorders, obesity, hypogonadism etc. apart
from metabolic bone diseases like rickets are seen. All deserving
patients are admitted for evaluation. These
include acute metabolic complications of diabetes (commonly
diabetic ketoacidosis) as well as patients requiring endocrine
dynamic testing . The Endocrine ward is located on the 4th floor of
Sri Padmavathi Medical College for Women hospital.
The well equipped Endocrinology laboratory performs various hormone
assays namely: TSH, T4, T3, LH, FSH, Estradiol, Prolactin, Cortisol,
GH, PTH and 25 OH vitamin D .The laboratory also performs the
Glycated Hemoglobin test, which tells about the level of diabetes
control over the preceding 2-3 months. The laboratory has a
collaboration with the Biochemistry Department of the Christian
Medical College, Vellore for External Quality Assessment Scheme (EQAS).
