The Department of Bioinformatics was established in the year 2003. Our university is first of its kind to start post graduate course in Bioinformatics in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The DBT, Ministry of Science and Technology have approved a centre for Bioinformatics Infra Structure Facility in the Department of Bioinformatics of our University for the promotion of Biology teaching through Bioinformatics as a part of National Bioinformatics Network. Ours is the first medical institution in south India to establish a Bioinformatics centre approved by DBT, Govt. of India. The Bioinformatics Infrastructure Facility was established by the DBT, Government of India in the year 2006 and the facility is housed in the Bioinformatics Building of the SVIMS University. This facility is having 2 Mbps broadband internet connectivity through BSNL and has high, medium end servers, Molecular Modeling facility (Silicon Graphics System with Discovery studio, Schrodinger 2009), state of the art desktop machines and software required for teaching and research in Bioinformatics. Apart from regular academic programs (M.Sc. Bioinformatics & Ph.D. Bioinformatics), we are also engaged in organizing National level works shops, training programs and guest lectures by eminent resource persons of the field to enrich the bioinformatics knowledge of students, faculties and researchers of different life science disciplines.

 

The infrastructure of the department is utilized by students and staffs of SVIMS, students of SV University and SPMVV for their research and dissertation works respectively. The Centre has undertaken projects in various areas like comparative genomics, reverse vaccinology, molecular modeling, drug target identification, development of teaching aids in Bioinformatics, etc. Collaborative initiatives were taken by the centre to start online certificate course in health informatics for healthcare professionals. The Centre has 4 positions of Studentship/Traineeship sponsored by DBT, Government of India, to train bioinformatics Postgraduates in various aspects of bioinformatics. The traineeship and the studentship are awarded for a period of six months from the date of joining and the selected candidates are entitled to receive a stipend of Rs. 5000/- per month for a period of 6 months.
