Introduction
Neurology is unique among medical specialties in its intersection
with psychiatry. Neurology deals with nervous system function and
disorders. The Department of Neurology at SVIMS was started in
February, 1993. The department made significant strides forward
since then in rendering neurological services to patients in
Rayalaseema area and evolved into a full-fledged neurological centre
equipped with latest diagnostic facilities in Andhra Pradesh. It is
one of the best neurological centre at SVIMS in Andhra Pradesh.
The Department deals with clinical, teaching & research activities.
The Department runs regular outpatients on all days i.e., from
Monday to Saturday and special clinics for epilepsy on every 3rd
Sunday. The department runs 24 hours emergency services which
includes inpatients and neuro-emergency cases in Casualty which
accounts for 40% of all emergencies in the institute. Active
clinical and research activities in the field of stroke and epilepsy
patients being established.
The Department actively participates in weekly Tuesdays/Saturdays
neurolo-radiological and Clinical discussions, Journal club,
Seminars and Electrophysiology classes and other academic, research
programmes of the Institute. Organised Continuing Medical Education
programmes for general practitioners, undergraduate and postgraduate
students of medicine and PHC doctors belonging to Chittoor, Cuddapah
and Nellore districts on most common neurological diseases like
Epilepsy, Stroke, Neuro-infections and Movement Disorders.
The Department is involved in clinical training of residents of
Neurology and takes regular teaching classes (bed side clinics) for
Post Graduate students of Medicine, Psychiatry & Paediatric from S.V.
Medical College and other Government/Private medical colleges of AP
like RIMS, AYJNIHH – SRC, PESIMSR, SMC &GH, PESIMSR. The department
taking teaching classes for B.Sc Nursing, Physiotherapy trainee
students (BPT & Diploma in Physiotherapy), M.A. in social work from
Mahila University.
Organised State Conference of AP Chapter of Neuro Scientists meet in
June, 1996. Started the "Indian Epilepsy Association, Tirupati
Branch" in November, 1997 with the help of Senior citizens of
Tirupati, Friends of SVIMS Society and Medical faculty of Tirupati.
This organization conducts regular free medical camps for Epilepsy
patients and distribute booklets on epilepsy in local language for
educating the public regarding social and medical aspects of
Epilepsy.
